Director of Pastoral Care – University Hospitals of Cleveland Medical Center

Chaplain Partnership is seeking a Director of Pastoral Care for University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, a 1,032-bed tertiary medical center specializing in adult/pediatric medical and surgical specialties. UH Cleveland Medical Center is an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University and together, they form the largest center for biomedical research in the State of Ohio. The Director will lead the Pastoral Care Department’s commitment to provide the highest quality spiritual care for the hospital’s patients, their families and staff.


Will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Successfully administer the duties and administrative functions of the Pastoral Care Department, including budgeting, paying bills and other functions normally associated with a department director’s responsibilities.
  2. Coordinating the Pastoral Care Department’s services with other hospital departments.
  3. Supervise, manage, schedule and assist the department’s administrative assistant, on-call chaplains, volunteers, priests and rabbis assigned to assist the Pastoral Care Department.
  4. Oversee spiritual care services for patients, patients’ families and staff consistent with the department’s commitment to providing quality spiritual care.
  5. Act as a liaison with the hospital’s other departments (Institutional Review Board, etc.) and committees to ensure that spiritual care considerations are recognized as an important part of the interdisciplinary care team.
  6. Provide mentoring opportunities for medical and biomedical ethics students.
  7. Provide educational opportunities for staff on the role that spirituality plays in patient care and how to best utilize the Pastoral Care Department’s personnel and resources.
  8. Develop and nurture positive relationships with local clergy and the community-at-large.
  9. Serve on appropriate hospital and system-wide committees and assist in developing and/or evaluating hospital services, policies, or programs related to pastoral care.
  10. Provide classes on various topics such as spirituality, end of life, bereavement, compassion fatigue, etc., for staff and caregivers.
  11. Develop outreach programs for those served by the hospital (possible programs could include creating a book club, a Bible study group, offering presentations on different faith traditions, staff memorial services and observing the special events at the hospital including their Tree of Life service, National Pastoral Care, Nurses’ and Volunteer Weeks, etc.).
  12. Develop 2-3 goals to grow the Chaplain Fund.
  13. Perform other reasonably related business duties as assigned by Chaplain Partnership and the immediate supervisor at the hospital. Chaplain Partnership reserves the right to revise or change job duties and responsibilities as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Graduate degree in an area related to pastoral ministry (e.g., M.Div., M.Th., etc.); completed a minimum of four units of clinical pastoral education; ordained and/or have an ecclesiastical endorsement from an appropriate source; board certified by a recognized national chaplains’ association; experienced as a Spiritual Care Department director or manager (preferred).
