Welcome, Chaplain Kate Huddelson

Chaplain Partnership welcomes Chaplain Kate Huddelson, who recently began serving as a palliative care chaplain at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She is a native Washingtonian who holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland in Behavioral & Social Sciences and a Master of Divinity from The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

After a career in non-profit administration and special event fund raising, she was ordained as a Minister of Word & Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church, USA – having been given a full scholarship from the Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church of Bloomfield Hills, MI.

Kate served as head of staff and pastor in local congregations in California, Michigan, Kansas & New York. Following early retirement from local parish work, she entered her chaplaincy training with an internship & residency at the University of Kansas.

As a member of The College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy, Kate attained her Board Certification as a chaplain and pastoral counselor. In addition, she obtained her specialty certification for hospice and palliative care while serving as palliative care chaplain at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Long Island, NY.

During her work at Stony Brook as part of her interdisciplinary teamwork, she was privileged to help create and execute the “Companionship Program,” which trained more than 25 student interns who provided specialized companionship services to the palliative patients at the University Hospital.

Kate is trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction through The Mindfulness Long Island Center and led weekly meditation groups for patients and the public at the University Hospital.

She attributes her vitality and enthusiasm to her 30+ years of weekly Sabbath keeping and her personal practice of mindfulness meditation. She believes that these practices help her and her patients achieve increased awareness and stronger physical, spiritual and mental health which can help with life’s important transitions.

Kate has two young adult children who reside in Michigan and New York.
