‘Whoever Provides Those Portals of Prayer Saved My Life!’

An Expression of Appreciation

Yesterday as I was sitting at my computer working on a project, there was a knock at my door. There stood a man with the kindest smile. He was clutching a Bible. He looked at me rather shyly and said, “I’m sorry to bother you, ma’am, but are you the Chaplain?”

I acknowledged that I am and welcomed him into my office. Hesitantly, he took a seat saying, “I won’t take much of your time.” “How can I help you?” I responded. “You already did in ways you will never really know.”

He proceeded to tell me that he had been a patient at Lutheran Hospital a couple of months ago for a week. During that time he received a copy of the July-September 2010 edition of Portals of Prayer.

He went on to explain that he had been laid off, lost his home and his car and was all but homeless except for the help of a dear friend. “I was at the end of my rope and didn’t know what I was going to do next or where I was going to go,” he said quietly. “It was so bad I was thinking of suicide, but I didn’t tell anybody that. I was just too embarrassed,” he continued.

He looked at me and said simply, “I picked up the Portals of Prayer and began reading and every one of those daily devotions spoke to me in such a personal and powerful way. Somehow I just began to feel hopeful again. Everyone here at the hospital was so kind and supportive. I just had to come back and tell you how important you all have been. Whoever provides those Portals of Prayer saved my life!”

I explained that the Portals of Prayer are provided courtesy of the Auxiliary of Chaplain Partnership for whom I work here at Lutheran Hospital.

Both of us want to express to you what a positive difference you have made in one man’s life! Thank you and God bless each of you!
