Description of the Program

  • Provide 24 hour spiritual care coverage or on-call services.
  • Assess and develop spiritual care interventions for patients.
  • Offer and provide spiritual care during end-of-life discussions.
  • Offer and provide spiritual care insights among the multidisciplinary team and general rounds.
  • Offer and provide spiritual care insights among the ethics committee.
  • Offer and provide spiritual counseling to any patients and families experiencing spiritual and emotional distress.
  • Offer and provide spiritual counseling for faculty and staff — maintaining confidentiality.
  • Offer and provide group crisis intervention when appropriate.
  • Create additional recreational and educational activities for patients — collaborative approach.
  • Coordinate and implement spiritual observances for patients, families, faculty and staff (e.g., spiritual, holiday, memorial or blessing services, etc.).
  • Develop and implement a Mindfulness in Medicine curriculum for faculty and staff — collaborative approach.
  • Develop and implement wellness programs for faculty and staff appropriate to the needs of each unit.
  • Research the value added to patient outcomes and employee experience.
  • Research ways in which spiritual care lowers lengths-of-stay.
  • Research ways in which spiritual care lowers re-admission rates.
